Easy Toad In The Hole Recipe

Toad In The Hole
This toad in the hole recipe is real comfort food, it's so easy to make and costs very little for a huge serving. It also great for vegetarians, as you can swap any meat sausage for a vegetarian option.
If you buy high quality sausages you will need to add the oil to the dish in order for the toad in the hole batter to rise around the sausages. Farm shop sausages are exceptionally high in quality and don't contain fatty cuts of meat.
Supermarket quality sausages are usually quite fatty, so they will deposit their own fat to make the batter rise. No oil is required here.
If you are a vegetarian or maybe sometimes like me just fancy a change, then you can use veggie sausages. The ones in the photos are Quorn. If using a meat substitute, you will need to add oil as these sausages are very low in fat and the toad in the hole batter will not rise without it.
If you're feeling adventurous, add a little mustard or herbs to the batter mix, or maybe a dash of Worcester Sauce! If you're feeling really reckless, add a little grated cheese of choice.
Toad In The Hole Ingredients:
Serves 2
1 large Egg
3 heaped tablespoons of Plain Flour
5 tablespoons of Milk
Pinch of Salt
4 or more Sausages of choice
1 teaspoon of oil (I use olive)
How To Make Toad In The Hole
- Preheat oven to 230 C / 450 F / Gas 8
- Put sausages (and oil if the sausages aren't fatty) into a baking dish (I use a pyrex dish lid) and put into the preheated oven
- They will need to cook for 8-10 minutes
Meanwhile...
- Break the egg into a jug
- Add a pinch of Salt and whisk
- Add the Flour and the Milk
- Whisk together
You want a smooth consistency that will pour easily, but isn't runny
If the consistency isn't right, add more Flour to thicken, or Milk to thin
- Put mixture into the fridge until needed
- Once the 8-10 minutes are up, carefully take the dish from the oven and add the batter mix
- Cook for 20 minutes
You now have a fully risen Toad In The Hole! This simple toad in the hole recipe is possible for anyone to make.

Sounds lovely, going to make this tonight, thank you
im so so hungry
Try it, it's great. Filler meal, delicious.
Eggs, milk and sausages (meat ones), non vegan, but very veggie friendly.
Eggs, milk, and sausages doesn't sound very vegatarian but, as far as, I'm concerned wrap in it bacon. Sounds good gonna have to try it.
Glad that it worked Diane!
I heated the oven for about half an hour and tried again. Perfection! I made a note to myself that this step is very important, thank you.
Hi Diane,
My guess would be that the oil wasn't hot enough, that's the most common reason for the batter not to rise. Even if you are a bit heavy handed with the flour it should still rise, just not as much as usual though. It sounds to me like your oven may have a fault?
Hope you solve the mystery. Here's to fully risen toad in the hole again soon!
What did I do wrong? I made this several times and it was perfect. This time it did not rise at all.
Was I too generous with the heaped tablespoons of flour?
Ot the batter wasn't cold enough?
I am using this recipe as we speak and will find out the results in about 15 mins :-)
Hi Diane,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm glad that you like the recipe, and by the sounds of it you'll be saving money on mixes. Excellent!
Hope you enjoy it many more times to come :)
Yes, this recipe is perfect! This rose much higher than the mixes, BTW, I had asked an English friend how her Toad rose so much and she was the one that suggested mixes. I've sent this to her. I am so happy, the mixes cost over a dollar and I make Yorkshire and Toad a lot.
BTW, when I make Toad, I use a Pyrex dish and boil the sausages on the stovetop for a few minutes, pricking them well to let the fat out. I then drain them and add about a tablespoon of oil before I heat the pan in the oven.
I am making this now and it is unbelievable! I usually use a mix because I have never been able to make homemade and have it turn out perfectly. Tonight I discovered I was out of the mix and for once, did not go to the tried and true recipes that failed, thinking I did something wrong the first three or four times I tried them unsuccessfully. I googled this. It is still in the oven but it is huge, nicely risen. Thank you so much!
Glad that it worked out Tammy, I tried to keep the recipe as simple as possible. Hope you and your hubby enjoy it for lots of meals to come!
Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

This is a really good, simple toad in the hole recipe. I often make it for a vegetarian friend and, when I use vegetarian sausages, I call it "Frog in the Hole". Unusually for a vegetarian she prefers to buy processed food and this is just the sort of recipe I think I could get her to make for herself. Thank you.
Fianlly a toady recepie I can easily follow! Thanks
very easy to follow, can't wait to try it
Hi Moonbun, I don't know if you're English or American or whatever, but I've always wanted to make toad in the hole, and this was a delightfully easy recipie, and the result was fabulous! I used traditional English 'bangers', and they worked out just fine. I'm going to make it again as soon as I find some onion gravy. I've a very fine deli where I live (Seattle), and they stock a lot of English foods. Thanks again!
thanks im havin it for my dins yumi x
