Baking With Kids - 3 Simple Recipes

Baking With Kids
Baking with kids can be a memorable experience for all involved. It's fun, a bit messy and the end result can be delicious. It can also be a great bonding exercise.
Baking with kids is a great way to get the younger generations involved and interested in cooking. It's a fun but informative way to introduce children to the basics of cooking and the ingredients they are using.
Best of all is that they get a math lesson without even realising, just by measuring the ingredients into the desired quantities. Science can also be incorporated; why do the egg whites go stiff when they are whisked? Baking with kids is educational, but most of all, it's fun and something to remember.
Below are three fun, but simple recipes for kids.
Chocolate Peanut Clusters
Ingredients to make 24:
200g Milk Chocolate
100g Peanuts
3 cups (each around 200ml) Rice Krispies
- Toast the peanuts on a baking tray in a medium oven for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let the peanuts cool then place them on kitchen paper and rub to remove any skins.
- Melt the chocolate in a bowl above a simmering pan.
- Once melted, stir in the peanuts and rice krispies.
- Transfer the mixture into small paper cases and allow to set.
Cereal Macaroons
Ingredients to make 24:
2 Egg Whites
Pinch of Salt
1 Cup (around 200ml) Caster Sugar
1 Cup shredded Coconut
1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 Cups Cornflakes or Rice Krispies
- Whisk the egg whites with the salt until they form stiff, glossy peaks.
- Carefully fold in the sugar using a metal spoon to retain air in the mixture.
- Next fold in the vanilla, coconut and cereal.
- Spoon the mixture into little heaps on a greased baking sheet or into cases.
- Bake at 180C / 350F for 10 - 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Place on a cooling tray.
Meringue Kisses
Ingredients for 36:
3 Egg Whites
150g Caster Sugar
1 level teaspoon Cornflour
1 teaspoon Vinegar
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper, or use a non stick tray.
- Mix the cornflour and sugar together.
- Mix the vinegar and vanilla extract together (seperate from the cornflour and sugar).
- Whisk the egg whites until they are stiff and glossy.
- Then add the sugar and cornflour gradually, whisking the mixture together each time until stiff again.
- When all the sugar and cornflour has been whisked in and the mixture is stiff, add the mixed vinegar and vanilla extract and whisk again.
- Either pipe the mixture onto the baking tray, or use a spoon to create little peaks.
- Bake at 140C / 275F for around 40 minutes, or until the meringue is crisp.
- The finished result should be that the ouside is crisp and the inside is marshmallow.
- Either serve alone or sandwich two meringues together with cream.
